Skills Cards and Curriculum

In September 2016, the club launched a new initiative to provide a more comprehensive framework for a coaching strategy, in particular for the junior players. A curriculum was devised covering chess skills and knowledge for players from complete beginner to advanced levels. Each member of the club is assigned a Skills Card where they can track their skills and knowledge. When coaches provide lessons, they may track progress and time spent on the card. A player may also do this by downloading a card themselves, as below.

The next step would be to digitalize the cards to get an overview of the club's progress in the curriculum. This should allow the club to better understand the level of the members, and monitor common areas for possible intervention.

While extremely beneficial for providing a focus for study and coaching, the Skills Cards demand a lot from coach and player, and really need a Coaching Officer to promote their use.
