Under 13 Community Games Dublin Finals 2022 team in action: Skerries(L to R, board 6 to 1): Áine Loughran, Róisín Burke, Mary Loughran, Louis d'Souza, Tom Jackson, Eibhlin Sullivan.

In 2020 on 1st March, just before schools closed due to Covid, the Community Games Dublin Finals were held and our U13 team came fourth. Full report in 2020 link above. In 2021 these finals were not held, although Skerries continued and ran the Skerries Community Games online (see Tournaments).

This year the Dublin finals were held at the last minute on Friday 10th June in Colaiste Eanna, Ballyroan at 5:00 pm, ending around 8 pm. The results of games played are as below. Thanks are due to all involved especially to the team organiser John Loughran, and to our new treasurer Eva Anderson and our Vetting Liason Officer Frank Sullivan who drove, accompanied and fed the team!

Perhaps due to the last minute arrangements only two teams entered the U13s while none entered the U16s or U11s. Teams consisted of five players plus 2 subs. While the subs did play against subs from other teams where these were available, only the results of the first five boards counted. Total game points on the top five boards were used to determine the winners. As usual our club will award board prizes to the players who scored the most points for their team.

We only entered one team into the Community Games Finals this year due to a lack of available players in the U16 age group. The U13 team was made up of Eibhlin Sullivan, Tom Jackson, Louis d'Souza, Mary Loughran, Róisín Burke and Áine Loughran. Aine played as a sub for the first two matches but was on the team on board 4 for our last match which we won after she came back from the dead to win with a queen against a rook and bishop in a nail-biting finish. There were other great games in each round and the whole atmosphere was friendly with the kids all enjoying themselves, and for some, enjoying their first experience of competitive team chess. Even the players on our team who scored no wins played well, and by their presence they gave others a chance to win on lower boards. In all we played three matches against our opponents Marley Grange. In each round the organisers swapped our players around so that the kids got to play someone different in each round, which worked well but was hard on our boards 3 and 5 in particular as they had to play much stronger players in some rounds. In the end Marley Grange won but we improved on our last outing by securing silver medals, partly due to the fact that we have kept our club going while other clubs either closed their junior sections or were less active during Covid.
